 Buy And Selling Tips

  1. Check the insurance rates for the kind of vehicle you are considering purchasing. You may be able to afford the car payments, but not the insurance.

  2. Check for manufacturer's recalls for the car you are considering.

  3. Check several sources ( Auto Trader magazines, autotrader.com, traderonline.com ) forcomparable car values to determine a fair price for the car.

  4. Prepare a list of questions in advance to which you want answers, or bring a friend with youprior to purchasing. This will ensure that you don't buy a car simply on it's looks and willhelp eliminate impulse buys.

  5. Check all of the options - power windows, locks, rear wipers, air conditioning, etc.

  6. Drive the car on several different types of roadway ( neighborhoods, freeways ) and drivingconditions ( stop and go, freeway speeds, hills, winding roads ). Pay attention to whetherthe car tracks straight or pulls to one side, if the tires are properly ballanced, if the carbreaks in a straight line or pulls to one side, and any unusual squeaks and rattles.

  7. Ask to see all of the service records indicating the car has received regular maintenance work.

  8. Always have the car you are considering checked out by a qualified mechanic prior to buying.

  9. Never buy a car without obtaining the title at the time of purchase. The car may have beensalvaged or even stolen.

  10. If you're in California, always make sure the car has passed smog prior to purchasing. It's theseller's responsibility to ensure the car is smog legal.
